Review: North of Need~Laura Kaye

This review is part of the Kiss & Tell Tour (Hosted by Bewitching Book Tours)
Kiss and Tell Button.jpg

Book Blurb (From Goodreads):

While attempting to escape the agonizing memories she associates with Christmas, twenty-nine-year-old widow Megan Snow builds a snow family outside the mountain cabin she once shared with her husband and collapses in tears against the snowman at the sight of what she'll never have.
Called to life by the power of Megan's tears, snow god Owen Winters appears unconscious on her doorstep in the midst of a raging blizzard. As she nurses him to health, Owen finds unexpected solace in her company and unimagined pleasure in the warmth of her body, and vows to win her heart for a chance at humanity.
Megan is drawn to Owen's mismatched eyes, otherworldly masculinity, and enthusiasm for the littlest things, and her heart opens enough to believe he's a Christmas miracle. But this miracle comes with an expiration before the snow melts and the temperature rises, Megan must let go of her widow's grief and learn to trust love again, or she'll lose Owen forever.

My Review:

If you haven’t read North of Need by now…you need to be taking this one from your TBR pile and get to reading. If you haven’t purchased it yet, this one is a well worth the money.

This is a heartwarming tale of love lost and then gained again. A story that will have you believe that even in the midst of heartbreak and sadness, you can love all over again. After losing her husband in terrible car accident, it’s hard for Megan to move on, hard to forget her life with John.  That is until on Christmas Eve, a wish is granted for her, all she has to do is accept it.  In comes Owen. A Ice God in the form of a hot, hulking, sexxy man.

I loved this book from the beginning to the end, although I have to say that I think Megan took a little too dog on long to claim Owen and I was a tad bit upset with her while reading some parts of the story. But she finally caught a clue and did what she had to do. Owen, OMG I want an Owen. He was so loving and caring, sweet. He was just all of the wonderful characteristics that you just don’t read about anymore in male characters. Especially when there a God or something like that.

on’t get me wrong, I love my tortured males.  But it was just great to read them in a different way.

This one gets 5 Black Orchids!

Oh & by the way, the sex scenes were off the chart good!

Kiss and Tell Tour: Author Promo Spot~Laura Kaye

Kiss and Tell Button.jpg

Please join me for the Kiss & Tell Virtual Book Tour (Hosted by Bewitching Book Tours), today we have an promotional stop for Laura Kaye's North of Need.

About North of Need:

Her tears called a powerful snow god to life, but only her love can grant the humanity he craves...

Desperate to escape agonizing memories of Christmas past, twenty-nine-year-old widow Megan Snow builds a snow family outside the mountain cabin she once shared with her husband, realizing too late that she's recreated the very thing she'll never have.

Called to life by Megan's tears, snow god Owen Winters appears unconscious on her doorstep in the midst of a raging blizzard. As she nurses him to health, Owen finds unexpected solace in her company and unimagined pleasure in the warmth of her body, and vows to win her heart for a chance at humanity.

Megan is drawn to Owen's mismatched eyes, otherworldly masculinity, and enthusiasm for the littlest things. But this Christmas miracle comes with an expiration--before the snow melts and the temperature rises, Megan must let go of her widow's grief and learn to trust love again, or she'll lose Owen forever.

His flaring eyes stole Megan’s breath. Already, the air around them sizzled. Something was happening.

Did she trust him?

“Yes,” she heard herself say. Her answer was instinctual. She didn’t need to think about it to know.

His heated, brilliant smile eased the nervous energy rushing through her veins. This day with him at Wisp had been unequivocally the best she’d had in two years. She had loved every minute of it.

Her body felt awake and powerful. Her heart, full and warm. She was alive. He’d brought her back to life.

“I want to share myself with you, Megan. I want to share everything,” he whispered, his voice nearly that same reverent intonation as when he’d murmured those foreign words against her heart.

“Yes,” she said again.

“It’s going to feel odd to you, like a tingling weightlessness. But it won’t hurt and I’ll bring you back the very instant you desire. If you want to say something to me, just think it. And I promise I won’t let you go.” He bent down and scooped a handful of snow, packed it into a loose ball.

Owen’s words did little to staunch the anxious excitement bubbling up inside her. Every nerve and muscle on edge, she could barely stand still. But she yearned to know what he wanted to show her. Something told her she was about to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “You lead, I’ll follow,” she said, echoing his earlier words.

The flare behind his eyes intensified. He dropped the snow into her bare palm. “Here, eat this, please.”

Megan brought the snow to her mouth with a shaking hand. The way he dragged his tongue back and forth against his bottom lip made what they were doing feel like foreplay. As soon as she’d closed her lips around the last bite, his mouth was on her, kissing, probing. Then, he pulled back, laced his hands around her neck and leaned his forehead against hers.

“Megan Snow, I love you.”

Megan gasped at his declaration. Her brain scrambled, tried to figure out how to respond.

Before she could, she ceased to be corporeal.

Owen! she screamed in her mind.

I’m here angel, and I’ve got you. Just feel. Take it all in.

I’m scared. Though she was no more than consciousness adrift, she would’ve sworn she felt his lips and hands caress her. The impossible sensation squelched the fear, left only a mystical thrill in its place.

I would never let anything happen to you, Megan. On my honor. On my life.

I believe you. What’s happening? The world glided under her, around her, like she was a bird soaring on the ebbs and flows of air currents.

We are the wind.

Author Interview (Karyn Gerrard)

Black Lust Tour.jpg

Hi All,

Please welcome today Author Karyn Gerrad, I'll be interviewing her on her book Black Lust

Book Blurb:
Lucius Black lives a debauched and wild nightlife. Being a ‘Quarter’ (1/4 vampire), blood and sex are what he is. However, his existence wears thin after a century of hedonistic pleasure.
Trevina Patterson lives a quiet, happy life running a hair salon in a village on the east coast of the United Kingdom. It was a perfect life and all she could ask for, until a chance encounter with Lucius Black.
What was it about him that was so unsettling and yet so attractive?
For Lucius, no woman had ever been enough, until Trevina. She awakened in him feelings he had not thought possible. Passions considered by him to be little more than vampiric mythology. She awakened his...black lust.

Living in a small town in a corner of Ontario, Canada, I wile away my spare time writing, reviewing and reading romance. As long as I can avoid being hit by a runaway moose here in this wilderness paradise, I assume everything is golden. Originally from the east coast of Canada, I love to set my stories in the Maritime Provinces~
Happily married for a long time to my own hero, a teacher that braves everything that is thrown at him. His encouragement keeps me moving forward.

Black Lust Banner.jpg

Okay...now for the good stuff..the Interview

Thank you so much for stopping by....I’m very excited to have you.

1. Tell us a little about yourself?
Thanks so much for having me!
I am neither young nor old, so middle aged would be a good fit! I have been happily married to my school teacher hero for decades, he is my biggest supporter. Though a voracious reader, I only started reading romances five years ago and writing the last three.
2. Can you please give us a little background on how Black Lust came about and Lucius & Trevina’s story?
Black Lust was originally a short story submission for an anthology; the publisher (Evernight) really liked it but thought it would work better as a novella or novel. They were right; I shoved too much plot into a short story format. So I went back to the drawing table, added extra scenes and resubmitted. I was thrilled I was offered a contract for it!
3. Why the title Black Lust?
Good Question, it's a play on the hero's last name, Lucius Black, also the Vampire Clan is called the Blackthorne Clan. The next story I am editing now and getting ready for submission is about Lucius's father and is called Black Desire.

4. Who has become your favorite character & why?
I really became fond of secondary character Wolfram Vladimirov. He is a Dhampyre (half-vampire) and part Werewolf. His subplot is very strong in this novella and I left it open should I want to revisit him and give him his own story further down the road.

5. What’s your favorite scene in the story?
I really like the scenes between Lucius and his cousin Wolfram; I like their conversation over breakfast.

Black Lust.jpg

6. The book's cover is really SEXXY, did you choose the design? Are the actors on the cover in close description to the main characters?
Evernight Publishing has rocking covers, Dara England designed mine. That is cover model Jimmy Thomas on the cover, to say I was thrilled is an understatement.  We give the publisher descriptions of the hero and heroine and I would have to say here the match is PERFECT. Just how I envisioned Lucius and Trevina!

7. Do you have any upcoming releases we should look forward to?
On December 18th I have a short story with Silver Publishing called CHRISTMAS MEMORIES, a contemporary sweet and sexy holiday treat!

Random Questions:

1. Favorite genre & author?
Historical and wow, I can't narrow it down to one, a few I will throw out there, Lisa Kleypas, Anna Campbell,  Elizabeth Hoyt,  Mary Balogh.

2. Any books your you’re reading at this time?
Just finished Gena Showalter's 'The Darkest Surrender'.  Am reading Diane Gaston's Valiant Soldier, Beautiful Enemy. I have a soft spot for Harlequin Historicals~

3. favorite color?

4. favorite time of the day?
I am a night owl. *hoot*

5. coffee or tea?
Tea. Big time.

Thanks again for stopping by my blog Karyn.

Thanks so much for having me!

Author Guest Blog: Laura Bickle

Hi All!

Please welcome Author Laura Bickle today as she talks about writing and her book Embers (Anya Kalinczyk #1)

Timeline of the Novel Affair
by Laura Bickle

Writing a book is a lot like being in love - good and bad. There is a predictable timeline and rhythm, I find. And it feels very familiar.

Initially, there's infatuation. The flush and excitement of a new idea. This is the easy part - words flow effortlessly. I can spend hours researching or daydreaming about how fabulous the idea is. I make notes, sketches, maps, cut clippings from magazines - I've met my characters, and am deliriously in love with everything they say. The project is, I believe, invincible.

It brings me flowers. I glow.

Then, somewhere around the 30,000 word mark, the infatuation fades. I begin to see the flaws, the inconsistencies, the cracks in the foundation of plot. I'm rolling over in the morning and staring at a book with bad breath that snores. It chews with its mouth open and forgets to say "excuse me" when it farts. It doesn't bring me flowers anymore. It starts wearing sweatpants all weekend. It's comfortable. Maybe too comfortable.

I sit in bed, staring at the book, wondering what to do. Should I abandon it for a newer, sexier idea? They're always dancing around in my periphery, seductively whispering: "Choose me."

But I know that it would be the same. I can choose another idea, but in a few weeks, I'll be at the same place, the shiny newness and rose petals replaced by snores and scratching.

At this time, I've got to decide to be committed to the project, to see it through -- even though my story is showing me its scraggly, unwashed underbelly. The challenge is to fall into a routine of writing that isn't new or exhilarating -- it's to focus on the entirety of the work, good and bad, and love it enough to finish.

There are moments that test my patience. A character proves utterly useless around 50,000 words and is savagely eliminated. A timeline problem emerges that requires my heroine to be in two places at once. A loose plot thread dangles with no end in sight. My characters are passively-aggressively silent. I sulk and ignor the work for weeks. But we get through it, perhaps with a bit of therapy with a crit partner or editor.

There are moments that are sublime. Keystrokes fly by through the last chapter. Edits clean the story up nicely, and all of a sudden, my story is standing before me. It's shaved, holding a bouquet of flowers.

I feel the old love for it again. Not the infatuation of the beginning. But deep affection, knowing that we've weathered the writing process and have come out the other side of it victorious.

I straighten its tie, kiss it on the cheek, and send it out into the world. I hope that others will love it as much as I do.

“One of the most promising debut novels I’ve read in a great while… I’d highly recommend this book to anybody who reads fantasy. It reminds me in many regards…of another exceptional first novel…Emma Bull’s seminal War for the Oaks, and there’s not much higher praise that I can give.”
—Elizabeth Bear on Tor.com

“Bickle has something great in Anya. Embers has everything: demons, ghosts, dragons, love, sex, police, and murder.”
—M.L.N. Hanover, bestselling author of Darker Angels

“Gritty but never grim, Embers is a truly urban fantasy, where the soul of a city haunts every page. I can’t wait for more of Anya and the unforgettable Sparky!”
—Jeri Smith-Ready, award-winning author of Bad to the Bone and Shade

Anya--who is the rarest type of psychic medium, a Lantern--suspects a supernatural arsonist is setting blazes to summon a fiery ancient entity that will leave the city in cinders. By Devil's Night, the spell will be complete, unless Anya--with the help of her salamander familiar and the paranormal investigating team --can stop it.

Anya's accustomed to danger and believes herself inured to loneliness and loss. But this time she's risking everything: her city, her soul, and a man who sees and accepts her for everything she is. Keeping all three safe will be the biggest challenge she's ever faced.

Anya Kalinczyk #2
Pocket Juno Books
Mass Market Paperback, $7.99
ISBN 978-1439167687
September 2010

The second book in Bickle’s series about Anya Kalinczyk is just as wonderful as the first—Anya is a compelling and likable protagonist and Bickle does an outstanding job in her portrayal of the city of Detroit; there are ruins, yes, but also hope in the ashes. Anya never takes herself too seriously and there is a scene in a baby supercenter that is absolutely not to be missed. (4 stars)
- RT Book Reviews

...a charming and inventive read.
-Elizabeth Bear, Realms of Fantasy Magazine, December 2010

Anya Kalinczyk is the rarest type of psychic medium, a Lantern, who holds down a day job as an arson investigator with the Detroit Fire Department—while working 24/7 to exterminate malicious spirits haunting a city plagued by unemployment and despair. Along with her inseparable salamander familiar, Sparky, Anya has seen, and even survived, all manner of fiery hell—but her newest case sparks suspicions of a bizarre phenomenon that no one but her eccentric team of ghost hunters might believe: spontaneous human combustion.

After fire consumes the home of elderly Jasper Bernard, Anya is stunned to discover his remains—or, more precisely, a lack of them; even the fiercest fires leave some trace of their victims—and she is sure this was no naturally occurring blaze. Soon she’s unearthed a connection to a celebrity psychic who preys on Detroit’s poor, promising miracles for money. But Hope Solomon wants more—she’s collecting spirits, and in a frantic race against time, Anya will face down an evil adversary who threatens her fragile relationship with her lover, her beloved Sparky’s freshly hatched newts, and the wandering souls of the entire city.

Review: Embers (Anya Kalinczyk #1) by Laura Bickle

Not what I was expecting, but a very good story to read. This was my first time reading a story where the main character is a medium and I gotta say I enjoyed it immensely. I was immediately drawn into the story from the start of the very first line.

Anya is a fire arson investigator during the day and at night, she works for DAGR as a lantern. She works as a spiritual vacuum, drawing in lingering spirits that do not or cannot move on. She is the last one called in when there are no other options left. It 's also a job that she no longer wants to do.  Anya feels disconnected from those around her and keeps most everyone at bay, even the people she considers friends.

Things I liked
Anya's salamander Sparky. He reminded me of an actual dog. Loving and fiercely protective of Anya. Also thought Anya character was strong and independent. I liked how she was determined to solve the problems that came her way.

Things I didn't like were mainly how Anya kept her friends at bay. I understand her reluctance to be around ppl because of her gift. But if someone cares about you, I just think it wasn't right.

All and all, I still enjoyed the book and I thought Ms Bickels writing and storytelling skills are excellent. Yes, the story was slow on some parts, but this one gets 5 Black Orchids.
