Creative Space

One of the loveliest gifts I received this year was an office of my own. My husband did most of the design and all of of the building. We had a space that we weren’t using anymore for the extra bedroom. We determined since it was a fairly large room, we could split it and use half for an office and half for a TV room, the part of the room is now referred to as the “man cave”.
I knew right from the start that I wanted a Victorian/Steampunk vibe in the room. We’ve collected antiques for many years, so we began to search for furniture that would represent the right time period, but also be useful.

We  headed down to Portland, Oregon for one of the biggest antique markets in the country. It was so large, we needed two days to get through it, and even then, we didn’t see everything. We just got so tired we had to give up.

And we found some amazing pieces. My husband had purchased an antique book case that was sized perfectly for the room. The fact that it had skeleton keys to open the cabinet made it even more perfect.  We added a large library table, and found a filing cabinet that needed a little TLC. With some wax, a few fixes and elbow grease, it was perfect.

An antique lamp form the early 1900’s provides illumination. The accessories were added slowly, with curtains, rods with glass finails and a small carpet from Pottery Barn along with, a chair dressed in a red and gold fabric, the room was fully furnished. Finally, at Steamcon in October, I found the perfect art for the room.

I can now sit at my desk, in my well-furnished office and dream up storylines, work on blogging and update my websites.
And sometimes I just gaze out the window at the mountain behind our house and daydream. Isn’t that what creative space is for?

What would your perfect office look like?
