So this weekend, I some pretty good books to choose quotes from. But I was able to choose one...yay me! Sienna Mynx is a new to me author who writes interracial romances. Taming The Scotsman was a fun, sexxy interesting read. But I swear I wanted to knock Alec straight upside his head...that's exactly what Jayla should have did...a couple of times...fool!

Jayla closed her eyes and raised her head heavenwad. "Jesus, forgive me." She opened them again. "You." She pointed a finger in his face "Can kiss my ass."
Alec frowned.
"I'd rather walk back in the snow barefoot and bottomless than give you a roll!" She said with air quotes over 'roll'. "Every time I think you're decent you remind me of how much of a jackass you are. And what's pathetic is I actually think you believe some of the crap you say. People around here walk on egg shells and tolerate your nastiness and you exploit their weakness. Get off on it."
Alec narrowed his eyes on her. "Careful, lass, not into a mouthy wench. It's a turn off!"
Her mouth went instantly dry. In all her life, she never despised a person as much as she did him at that moment. This time she wouldn't run, hide, or even back down. She crossed her arms, tapping her left foot, seconds from exploding. This time she'd fight back. "I wouldn't sleep with you if your life depended on it. In a few seconds it will if you don't move and let me out of this room. You jackass!"
Alec ran his tongue over his teeth. his lips pressed tightly shut, looking her over. Was he sizing her up? Was he going to force her? He better not try. She'd beat him with that bottle in his hand.

Autho's Webite / ARe / Amazon / Smashwords
I loved when Jayla got fierce...she was such a sweet person and just about everyone in this book took advantage of the woman. I was so happy when she told his ass off!

Oh & this one is FREE too lovelies!

Her Wicked Angel – Excerpt
“Come, we must move.” Asmodeus scooped her up into his arms and beat his wings before she could even form a response, taking off into the crisp night air.

It was getting chilly.

Liora used it as an excuse to cuddle up to his bare chest and was thankful he only had partial armour. It was much nicer curling up against hard hot flesh than it would have been rubbing against cold metal plates.

“You’re going to be in trouble, aren’t you?” she said and the breeze carried her voice over his shoulder.

He beat his shadowy black wings and took them higher, until they were gliding above the city and she couldn’t take her eyes off how beautiful it was. All the lights twinkled in the darkness and cars streamed down streets forming bright slashes of red and white. Boats caused the wide river to glow in places. The Eiffel Tower sparkled in the distance.

“Perhaps,” he whispered and she felt his gaze shift to her, boring into the side of her face. “But I have a feeling that you may be worth it.”

She smiled at that. How could anyone think this man pure evil? She had only had to speak to him to know that while he held darkness inside him, and was capable of great cruelty and violence, there was still some good in him, hidden away beneath the vicious exterior he wore like a shield.

She turned her head to look at him but he moved his gaze away from her, looking down at the city as they flew over it instead. She drank him in, studying the nuances of his expression as his golden gaze flitted around, taking in the scene stretching below them. The wind ruffled his wild black hair and she ached to brush her fingers through it, combing it back and feeling its silkiness just as nature was allowed to do.

“Will the Devil send more men for me?” She feared the answer to that question even though she already knew it deep in her heart.

The black slashes of his eyebrows met in a frown and his golden eyes darted to her. “Yes.”

“Will you fight them?” Her voice trembled and she hoped he would think it was the wind that caused it, not the fear growing in her heart. She had never been this afraid before, had always faced things head-on and without flinching, even as a child. The thought that the Devil wanted her for some nefarious reason and had sent his best man to retrieve her, marking her as important to him, made cold steal into her veins and sent a shiver through her soul.

Asmodeus hesitated and something surfaced in his eyes, something that set her on edge. He looked uncertain.

Over a year ago, Serenity had called and told her that they had to cancel their get together because something had happened to Apollyon. Heaven had exercised its will on him and had controlled him, forcing him to do their bidding against his will, and it had shaken the powerful male.

If Heaven held that power over Apollyon, did that mean Hell and the Devil wielded it over Asmodeus?

“I will try.” He looked away again, the sombre note to his deep voice and the fraction of his emotions that she could sense with her power conveying that he meant it but he didn’t believe he would be able to defeat whatever force the Devil sent after him.

All the more reason to ask Apollyon and Serenity for help, but she still couldn’t bring herself to raise it with him, not while everything felt so tentative and liable to fall apart if she mentioned the other angel.

“Perhaps you would be safer away from me.”

Liora stared at him, shock rippling through her. “No. I’m safer with you.”

“Do not fool yourself, Liora. I feel your fear. I thrive on that emotion. It gives me pleasure as much as anger and rage, and pain.” His voice gained a dark edge that echoed within his power and she frowned when she realised what he was doing. He was driving a wedge between them. He meant to make her leave. “You are safer away from me.”

“I am safer with you. If anyone has the power to protect me, it’s you, Asmodeus.”

“Or Apollyon. He would be the better choice. He is always the better choice.” The darkness in his voice turned to bitterness that she could feel lacing his power and she held on to him.

“How do you know he’s the better choice for me? Isn’t it my choice?” She glared at him now and then it faded away when she caught the tiny almost imperceptible grain of fear hidden beneath his other emotions.

Fear that he would fail her?

Or fear that he would end up doing as his dark master commanded and would hurt her?

He thrived on seeing others hurt and their suffering. He was afraid that the Devil would make him harm her and that he would end up enjoying it. She had thought the Devil would be sick and twisted, but this was taking sick and twisted to a whole new level.

“Asmodeus,” she whispered and he looked at her, his beautiful golden eyes void of any warmth. She wished she could touch his cheek and reassure him somehow, but she didn’t want to loosen her grip on him when they were so high above the city. “You will not fail me.”

He looked away again and uncertainty filled his eyes for a brief few seconds before they cleared again.

“Apollyon will not fail you. I am only a shadow of that male.”

It struck her that he was having one serious existential crisis and she was in part to blame for it. Her careless words when they had first met had dealt blows and wounded him, and now he couldn’t shake the doubts that she had placed in his head. She wished she had the ability to turn back time and relive that moment all over again with the knowledge she had now, but even she wasn’t that powerful.

All she could do was try to smooth things out and heal the wounds she had unwittingly inflicted with her words.

“You’re not a shadow… not any more than I’m a shadow of my cousin. She’s so damn good and caring, and I’m reckless and wild, and liable to go off demon hunting without telling anyone, and I’m forever getting into scrapes. Everyone tells me I should be more like her… but I’m not her. We share blood but we’re not the same person. We couldn’t be more different.” Liora leaned in and pressed a kiss to his cheek, lingering with her lips against his cool flesh.

He paused, beating his wings to keep them steady in the night air high above the glittering lights of Paris.

“You won’t fail me, Asmodeus. I’m choosing you,” she whispered against his skin and then settled her head on his shoulder, waiting for him to rebuff her.

He didn’t.

She looked down at the quiet world below them.

“Do you like the view?” she said to fill the silence.

“It seems alien to me… bright and colourful… strange… unsettling.” He didn’t sound as if he liked it. “Hell is a black cavernous ceiling above a forbidding harsh landscape. Rivers of molten lava and lakes of fire provide the only natural light. It is… different to this world. You would think it bleak, desolate and dangerous.”

Everything Apollyon had told her it was.

She frowned and looked at Asmodeus. “Then you’ve never seen the stars?”

His golden gaze drew away from the world below them and rose to meet hers. “No.”

“Will you take me somewhere?”

He nodded. “Where?”

Liora bravely took one hand away from his neck and Asmodeus’s grip on her increased, drawing her closer to him, filling her with a sense of safety that felt strange considering he was apparently made of pure evil. She didn’t think a male with nothing but evil in his heart would care much about whether she fell to her death or not. A male who was only evil and nothing good would have laughed as she fell and ensured he was close enough to get a good view when she splatted against the pavement.

She pointed to the distance, to the darkness beyond the city boundaries. “Take me out there. Take me to the stars.”

Review: Fallen by Elise Marion

Thursday, September 26, 2013

Source: Purchased (Free Book & it still is)
Published: November 3, 2011
Self Published
Series: Angels Among Us #1
Book Blurb
Sex: PG - Medium Sexual Situations
Authors Website
Genre: Paranormal, Romance

This story was short and sweet even with the slight religious tones. Even though the love between an Angel and Human is forbidden, Amir (the angel) and Shayla (the human) cannot help the feelings that are growing between them.

Amir is a healing angel sent to heal Shayla after she is in a brutal car accident. As he heals and cares for her, he starts to see the strong woman that is beneath the bandages and he cannot help but fall. Shayla has no one and after being enstranged from her parents over the past two years, Amir is welcome company (even if he is a stranger) while she recuperates.

Even though this book was 76 pages, it really did feel like a full lenght read. Amir and Shayla were a cute couple together and although the sexxy times weren't what I usually read, they were still hot and full of tension especially because Amir knew that being with Shayla was forbidden.

The fold out of the story was simple and straight to the point. I espcially like that the author made her angels falliable, whereas they still are able to feel what humans feel even though they are held at higher morals. It made them relatable and you felt for Amir as he struggled with his attraction towards Shayla and his job an healing angel. I really did like the fact that she made his decision tough, he didn't just make a choice and there would be no consequences. Because whether he chose Shalya or not, he would loose something.

All and all the characters were very likeable and so was this story. Ms. Marion definitely has a new stalker *coughs* I mean reader to her books.

Review: The Bad Death by Naima Haviland

This could have ended up being a book that I loved with a 4 heel review, but it will receive three heels here at SR. Three heels because I like the history and backdrop that was given throughout it. I feel the author took her time and carefully resesearched slave history and that gave her some bonus points.

I'm going to tell you what I did not like about The Bad Death. I found out with a litttle research that this is possbily a prequel. Yes, a prequel to the authors first book in what seems to be a triology...what? go figure. As this is NOT mentioned on the authors site, amazon..um, yeah nothing. I actually had to check out other folks reviews...so who says that book reviewers thoughts mean nothing?

Anyways...The Bad Death turned out being just a book I liked. I initially picked it up because of the cover is too fucking die for. My main issue is that I felt the author failed to deliver this story to where she wanted it to be. Although there was some kick ass action along with a kick ass heroine..the story itself left me with a whole lot of confusion and this I think would have been easily solved if I had known there was book before this one. But this book is treated and written as a separate story.

The Bad Death is pretty much giving you Julian's back story who is a Master Vampire in the first book, Blood Room. AND the spirit that is riding Anika, the heroine in THIS story is Julian's lover from the first boook. Confused much? yeah...so was I. I felt that The Bad Death maybe...should have been the first book in this so called Trilogy and then maybe Blood Room next. Because here, we really don't get a backdrop of when Julian became a vampire or anybody else for that matter. But I guess this will all be revealed in the 3rd book or maybe its mentioned in Blood Room? I don't know....

Here's the thing. As I have mentioned, I am a history buff so I love when I author does their research and gives me something worth reading. This is what Naima Haviland did..she did her research on Slave history and the deep south. I thought she did a good job in reflecting the speech and actions of both the slaves and their Masters of that time period. This is ALSO why this book got three heels.

Some other things I liked was that the herione is Black and she was kick ass. So rare do I read stories where the main characters are of color AND they are fierce. So yeah, it was another reason I jumped all over this book. Anika who is a slave is suddendly taken over by what the other slaves refer to as a "hag" a spririt who takes over ones body when they are asleep. Anika doesn't remember how the spirit took over her body, but she knows that she is suddenly drawn to the land owner Julian. I also loved the fact that the vampires in this story were scary as all shit. I mean like rip out your neck scary...really there are no romanticizing of vamps here. They are straight up killers.

I also like the sort of love triangle that went on between Anika, Julian and another slave Marcus. And although there really wasn't much time focused on it, it was still interesting to read. Anika's sudden attraction to Julian is conflicting for her because he is the land owner and master, plus their relationship during that time was definitely not accepted...it was okay for Julian to sleep with her, but for them to be in a actual relationship? no not happening. She also isn't sure if its really hers or more of the hags feelings that are drawing her to Julian. Julian...although he wasn't cruel towards the slaves on his land, he really was ignorant about a lot of things or I should say he pretty much saw what he wanted to see and ignored the rest. Which is why he didn't know that Anika was already a worker on his land when he first saw her. He didn't understand his sudden feelings towards Anika either, he just knew that he wanted her...needed to keep her safe. And Marcus the other slave, I don't know. I didn't really care of him at all and I get why he used Anika the way he did, but still it wasn't right.

This story is scary with a gothic feel to it.I'm not much of a horror reader, but I think the horror, paranormal and romance elements added blended very well together.

This is really just a separate story from Blood Room, Which does NOT help in the confusion department. Why? there is no mention of Julian becoming a vamp and he was bitten in this story. BUT his family wants to keep him in the dark about such things because he really can't accept supernatural thingys such as vampires at face value. EVEN when they are staring him right in the face! I mean he seriously thought it was some type of rabies epidemic going around...smh.

As I've mentioned I felt there was a WHOLE lot going on with The Bad Death. Things to like... Anika was kick ass. Even in her state of learning that a "hag" took over her body a bit, the girl becomes a vampire slayer that Van Helsing would have been proud of. Julian one of our Heroes was a little irritating. I liked him enough, but he fell short for me. He wanted Anika....didn't know why all of a sudden why he was drawn to this slave. I felt too that he just a little naive. I get that he was a man of science and just could not accept that vampires exsisted, BUT seriously dude? they're in your face...you got bit! Wth?!....

All and All.. a three. If you want to read, get Blood Room FIRST and then The Bad Death. Its what I should have did, but didn't. And I'm not sure if I want to go back and read Blood Room, but Julian sounds much more interesting in that story.

Questions, I have left are what will happen to Anika & Julian? because its sort of where this story left off. *sigh* I mean will they be together when they leave together for Boston? will they find out who the spirit is that took over Anika's body? Do both Anika & Julian become vampires? Just so many things left unanswered...lets hope this author settles this all in the third book.

A Mid-Look @ my Current Read

Thursday, September 19, 2013

This is more of a random post really. But its also to give you a little peek in to what I'm currently reading right now. The book is quite good, but confusing at the same time...is that possible?

Anyways, The Bad Death has a little bit of almost everything going on it which would probably explain my confusion. There's a lot of history about slaves, slave owners, Gullah talK and a whole lot of superstitions. It was certainly a lot to take in, but its entertaining and I enjoy reading about things like this. It makes for an exciting read, plus it always nice to learn some history while you're reading.

Now, we have a herione who is a time-traveling ballet dancer who is also a vampire slayer. She's pretty cool and I like her...our Hero, well right now he's still growing on me. I like him, but he's....he's what I'm finding out is a man who believes in science so he really isn't hip to this whole vampire taking over my plantation thingy. Oh and there's also a lil bit of a love triangle between our ballet dancing vampire slayer, our plantation owner and another slave. It's quite juicy and irritating all at the same time.

Hopefully I'll be finished by the end of this week and I can give my full thoughts on it. I had a bad day this week and it kinda slowed down my reading a bit. But I back in the fro a bit :)

Have a great day Beautifuls
