Hard As Ice has all of the makings of a perfect romance and suspense, but….
Former CIA agent Evan DaCosta now runs his own security firm and their current assignment is to find out who are the culprits in the multi-million dollar jewelry heist from a well know auction house. In comes Nia James, she is their prime suspect as she and her boss were the only ones to have had the password to the safe that the jewelry was stolen from. This is where your suspense comes in. Nia knows she is the target of Evan and his team's investigation. She just has to prove that she is innocent...hard to do when you have a questionable background.
Everything about Nia points to her as being part of the heist but the more information Evan uncovers about her, he can’t help but wonder if they are truly focusing on the right person and as he gets closer to her as a undercover agent, he has to wonder if the hard cold shell she puts forth is all a act.
I liked the story and would have enjoyed it more if some of the fat was cut from it. Somethings I felt there unneccessarily added issues and they just weighed it all down for me. Not to say that I don’t like details because I do but sometimes I feel folks can over do it, there was definitely some overdoing going on in Hard As Ice. Evan...I loved his character, I enjoy when authors go away from the norm and give us passionate feeling men. Men who aren’t afraid to where their heart on their sleeves, this was Evan. He wanted Nia badly and he had her BUT of course ya’ll know she had to be the hard shell to crack. Lawd, she worked my nerves to no end. Like I seriously had a love hate relationship with this chick. I was feeling Nia because of the tough past she came away from and was still able to make the world work in her favor. BUT ghurrlll, this man trying to love on you and you with the ol “I don’t know if I can trust him” schick. Yes, the man lied...uhm he’s an undercover agent, he suppose to dummy. BUT once he comes clean and he's trying to fight for your silly ass, here comes the “oh my past and I don’t know if I can live the rich fabulous life that I think you want me live” blah blah damn blah!
Oh she was annoying to boot, see? love-hate. So as much as I enjoyed the suspense of this story, I wasn’t feeling the romance so much. I know fiction is fiction but ain't no man checking that hard for nobody nomo!
And too many details, also slow to start...it took too long for the action to get moving for my taste.
All and all, this is a good story and Ms. Scott's world building is done well. A good suspenseful romance to add to your reading list. I would definitely continue with the series.
**BTW, boo bear on that cover?! mmmmhhhmmmm! he is fine!
