GoodReads Blurb:
In this Prohibition-era caper, society matron Lola Woodby agrees to recover a stolen film reel for its rightful owner, but before she can retrieve it, the man in possession of the reel is killed.
30-year-old society matron Lola Woodby has survived her loveless marriage with an unholy mixture of highballs, detective novels, and chocolate layer cake, until her husband dies suddenly, leaving her his fortune…or so Lola thought. As it turns out, all she inherits from Alfie is a big pile of debt. Pretty soon, Lola and her stalwart Swedish cook, Berta, are reduced to hiding out in the secret love nest Alfie kept in New York City. But when rent comes due, Lola and Berta have no choice but to accept an offer made by one of Alfie’s girls-on-the-side at his funeral: in exchange for a handsome sum of money, the girl wants Lola to retrieve a mysterious reel of film for her. It sounds like an easy enough way to earn the rent money. But Lola and Berta realize they’re in way over their heads when, before they can retrieve it, the man currently in possession of the film reel is murdered, and the reel disappears. On a quest to retrieve the reel and solve the murder before the killer comes after them next, Lola and Berta find themselves navigating one wacky situation after another in high style and low company.

A new quirky, colorful detective heroine emerges in this Roaring 20's cozy mystery that dazzles the reader with high society, gangsters, and Prohibition era murder, and mayhem.

Lola Woodby, her side-kick Swedish cook Berta, and a questionable gumshoe detective take on the mob, filmstars, and Lola's family with the last group being the ones she avoided the most

The tone of the book is light and Lola is on the daffy side so this one felt more cozy mystery than hardcore historical mystery.  It had a nice flavoring of the era though it didn't dig too deep.  Lola is middle-aged, average-figured and a new widow though it was a relief to get away from her womanizing louse of a husband even if she is now penniless and must find a way to earn a living.  She has no idea what she is doing half the time letting her emotions and odd starts lead her through the case.  She's more lucky than good, but it was fun to see her sneaking about and nosing out the clues one by one.

There's a fun cast of quirky characters surrounding Lola that added a good layer to the story.  I felt sorry for Lola stuck with her snooty family, but because they were so stuffy, they were hilarious.  Lola's amateur detecting partner, Berta is a great foil as is Ralph Oliver the private eye who is always around and interested in Lola as more than his assignment and tries to teach her something about the art of detecting.  The other society people out on Long Island, the film folks and the gangsters were the color and did a great job providing the excitement.  And my favorite?  Well that was Hibbers the butler who notices everything, supports Lola, and concocts a mean highball.

The mystery was somewhat trickier than I thought.  It started with a gal willing to hire Lola to get a film canister back and then people started dying as more motives and suspects came into the picture.  I figured out some of the sneaking around and secrets, but I didn't figure out the actual murders before the end.  I would have never worked that out and was a tad disappointed, but I can see how it sort of tied in with the direction I was going for the solution.

In the end, I was well-pleased with the first in a new to me series by an author I hadn't read previously.  I enjoyed the humorous tones, the 20's setting, and the characters.  There was excitement and escapades that made it a tad more exciting than the usual arm-chair whodunnit.

EXCERPTSherry knew the appeal of the no-strings-attached style of relationship, normally went in for that herself. So why did the thought of a roll in the hay with Talon followed by a kiss goodbye leave her cold? She busied herself with the coffee maker while Talon prowled around the small kitchen, taking up far too much space and making it impossible for her to pretend he wasn’t there and get her head straight. And her heart. She blamed it for her sudden desire to have more than a one night stand with a hot guy.“Milk, Tony?” She poured two mugs of coffee. He froze with his head in the refrigerator, withdrew and slowly turned towards her, the scowl back in place.
His deep voice rolled through the room, curled around her and did wicked things to her body.“Talon,” he said with determination, with a hard edge that was both a demand and a command, one that thrilled her as she imagined him ordering her around in the bedroom in that same voice. “Talon. Say it.”A sudden onset of nerves swept through her as she looked into his hard amber eyes, looked at him for all that he was, and realised that if she said his name, the flimsy barrier she had tried to construct between them by avoiding using it would fall.Leaving her exposed. He straightened to his full height, towering over her, at least the same height as Kyter’s six-five. Talon was broader though, heavy with muscle, cutting an imposing figure as he stared her down, silently demanding she do as he wanted.“Tiger,” she blurted and went to face the coffee mugs again.Talon moved in a blur of speed, suddenly pressed right against her, and had her cheek in his palm again, bringing her head back around to face his.“Talon.” His tone could have made diamonds it was so hard, so sharp and pressing. She swallowed hard, trembling from head to toe as she drowned in his amber eyes, watching the gold shimmering among the amber. Her mouth turned dry.She swept her tongue across her lips to wet them. His gaze fell there, grew hungry and heated, and turned the fire up inside her.“Talon,” she whispered. His eyes shot to hers. His throat worked on a hard swallow.“Dear gods,” he muttered and just as quickly as he had closed the distance between them, he opened it up again, disappearing into the living room. She stared at where he had been, reeling from the suddenness of his disappearance, and how shocked he had sounded. How pained. What the ever living fuck?

Her Secret Life by Tiffany L. Warren

Author: Tiffany L. Warren | Source: NetGalley | Format: ePub | Published: April 25 2017 | Published: April 25 2017 | Series: No | Genre: Romance | Fiction | Available: BN | Amazon | +Goodreads

Whew! Sweet baby jeezup, I really wanted to like this book but lawd, I see that I can’t even finish it and where am I?
*let me check*…hmmm, 25%...chapter 7.

You know what it is? I don’t like this chick. The main character, hell we haven’t even gotten to her HEA and I just don’t like her. That’s right, I said…I don’t like H.E.R! lols.

Her Secret Life starts off with Onika Lewis getting hit on by I assume will be her man by the end of the book (but again I didn’t finish this). But she turns him down because she is homeless and then the books takes you back to the past which is giving you background on how Onika ended up at this point in her life.

This should have been a good lead up to take you into the present and the start of what would be a new relationship right? But oh, no…the author decides IMO to spend way too much time in the past. Because I bet my sweet booty, that by the time I got to the present where Onika has met her “forever”, I would not have cared one damn bit…not a one.

So what was my issue you ask?

Firstly, I had some issues with some of the wordings in Her Secret Life. All I’m going to say is we have to stop with the stereotypes as well. Because when we tell our own stories, they can at times be problematic too.

Mainly, as I said I was not a fan of Onika. Oh, yes she was a ball of contradictions but it was annoying. I want to chalk these failings up as Onika being young and coming from a bad place. BUT for all this characters talk of not “ending up like her family”….well….

25% into Her Secret Life is enough for me and there are sixty-two chapters! Bish…you know what? No, not this time around Gawd! I don’t have that kind of time, I mean I do but there are too many books in my “Bish we just sitting here” pile for me to be all frustrated and irritated with one. So I must move on.

But hey, everything ain’t for everybody...right? So what I didn’t like you may love. I'm sure there are some folks that love Her Secret Life but I ain't one of em. I will have to try another book by Ms. Warren.

Waiting On Wednesday (Wow)

What Am I Waiting For????

Book Goodness
The concluding part of the highly-acclaimed science fiction trilogy that began with Nnedi Okorafor's Hugo- and Nebula Award-winning BINTI.

Binti has returned to her home planet, believing that the violence of the Meduse has been left behind. Unfortunately, although her people are peaceful on the whole, the same cannot be said for the Khoush, who fan the flames of their ancient rivalry with the Meduse.

Far from her village when the conflicts start, Binti hurries home, but anger and resentment has already claimed the lives of many close to her.

Once again it is up to Binti, and her intriguing new friend Mwinyi, to intervene--though the elders of her people do not entirely trust her motives--and try to prevent a war that could wipe out her people, once and for all.

Don't miss this essential concluding volume in the Binti trilogy.

Why: Because I love this series, it truly bought my love of science fiction fantasy reads back. Added bonus with the Binti series and other books by this author is that her stories are African based.

Movies: What We're Exciting For and What We Saw

Now, there are a couple of movies that are being coming up and out that I'm excited about...I mean dance til I drop excited. I also saw Wonder Woman this past weekend, check my thoughts out below.

The Dark Tower (2017)
Lissseeennnn baby! My lover (in my lil ol head) is starring in this one and I can't wait until August gets here. I've read the Dark Tower books by Stephen King and highly enjoyed them. I just hope that somebody finally gets a movies/tv show or whateever made based off one of this mans books correct or at least close to the damn book! I sincerely hope The Dark Tower is the first!

Black Panther (2018)
So the trailer for the highly anticipated Black Panther movie dropped and well, the world stopped (or at least mines did, lols). I literally watched this trailer about 100 times already. It was beautiful, it was bad ass, it is going to BE all of that and a bag of mfing chips. I can't wait, but February 2018? come on bruh! come on!....

T'Challa, the new ruler of the advanced kingdom of Wakanda, must defend his land from being torn apart by enemies from outside and inside the country.

(2017) Out Now
Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that's raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman was good. I know folks are all excited about it and they should be…you should be if you haven’t seen it yet. But for a two hour plus movie, it could have been way better.
  • .      Since this is the first movie, we should have gotten more time of learning about Wonder Woman home Themyscira. We really don’t get much of her being at home. Sure we get a brief time of her growing up…but nothing really of her relationships with the other Amazons. Not even with her Mother, it was disappointing to say the least. I just feel like IF this will be the first movie in her Franchise, we should have learned more about her home. I mean, she ain't have no friends? like WTH?
  • .       The romance – Now look man. I’m all for Wonder Woman finding love and all that BUT this chick just left home…ain’t never met a man before in the whole of her life but she falls in love and haves sex with a man in just two days. No, I could have seen a friendship type of relationship building between WW and Steve but forreals….giving up the wonder drawers in two days? nah dawg. I also had an issue with how much time was spent on this “romance building”…shiiitttt, Lois ain’t even get that much play in Superman. IJS.
  • .      The storyline was a bit boring. Again two plus hours and the story just didn’t fit. There should have used more editing/cutting to get it down to maybe a hour and a half. Two hours of Wonder Woman chasing around Europe trying to get the bad guy and falling in love with a man was…IMO wasteful.
  • .      I did love Gal Galdot as Wonder Woman. She gave a innocence to our young WW, coming out of her home with big ol saucer eyes and rose color glasses on. Our young WW is trying to fight the good fight…to save human kind. And she knows she can kick ass but learns that man even without the help of a devious God is sometimes evil to the core.
  • .      The action scenes were hard f88ing core. Oh, thank you movie gods for giving us a woman that can kick some ass and take names. Best part of the movie for me was the action scenes. Yassss Wonder Woman, fuck em up girl!
  • .     Can we add more WOC in the next movie? I know there were more black Amazons and       where were the Asian Amazons? Latina Amazons? Indian Amazon? .....
As you can see, I had my issues with Wonder Woman but all and all I thought it was worth the movie $$ spent. It's action eye candy.

Pre-Order: Winter's Beast by Twyla Turner

Blurb

"I have never resented Ivan’s good looks. But there are times, once I became of age to date girls and women, that I wish I could look more like him than myself. Women are not often quick to date a monster.
I was okay with that. Until now. Until Winter. She changed everything..."

Ivan Petrov is a ruthless Russian businessman who is only six degrees off mob boss. He doesn't give a rat's ass about anything other than getting what he wants. And he wants Winter Rose, the prodigy opera singer, and is willing to torment her sexually until she begs for it. He could care less that Yury, his disfigured and most trusted guard has fallen for her.

Winter's Beast is one part sugar and sweet, two parts sex and sweat. It is not your typical Romance and although it has an HEA, it's a dark, twisty road to get there.
