Tuesday Jams #191: A Review, Toni Braxton's Sex & Cigarettes

Tuesday, March 27, 2018

Okay, so Tuesday Jams is going to be a bit different today. I will still post a video, which of course will be a song from Toni Braxton's newest release but I also just wanted to give my lil ol two cents about the album itself. Soooo....here we go.

1. There are 8 tracks on Ms. Braxton's new album. I've seen some folks say they wanted more tracks but me? I'm good with the eight. It's a nice in-between number where the listener won't feel so overwhelmed especially if you aren't digging every song. So kudos for that!

2. I'm loving the mix of slow jams to uptempo beats. We still have classic Toni getting us through our current or old heartbreak but the throwing in of electronic beats lets you do more than just a two step or look blindly out your window crying☺. Shiiid, you can dance the hurt away and tell that heartache to get to stepping.

3. My favorites: Deadwood, Long As I Live, FOH (Fuck Outta Here) and Missing.

Basically, I enjoyed the whole album. I love that she came out with new music and didn't do "too much". Sex & Cigarettes is enough without all the extra, it's nostalgic music that reminds me of time when music what just that music. Something I can get lost into, something that I can relate to and mainly lyrics I can understand without looking at my radio like:

It's music from an artist who knows her craft. An artist who knows her audience and is happy to make us happy. This is an artist who isn't desperately trying to fit into today's standard of generic nonsense. Anyhoo's before I get all long-winded, let's move onto number four.

4: finally get into the video for Long As I live

Bish looks good btw...damn good!

Sex & Cigarettes has been on auto play for me since it's release. Definitely a 9 outta a 10 kinda of a album. Get into it!

Sophia's Review
I confess that it was the title that caught my attention first.  The author explains in the beginning that it comes from a Ray Bradbury quote which intrigued me all the more.  So with eagerness, I pressed forward and popped in my earbuds for a good time with this new to me urban fantasy and author.

The beginning was a tad rough for me because I had the disorienting sense that I'd somehow skipped the opening and dropped into the middle of things.  A quick check showed that yes, there appears to be a prequel short story that likely introduces matters.  I haven't read it, but I'm going to guess that this one probably wouldn't feel so disorienting if read after the prequel.  That said, the confusion didn't last that long and I was soon cruising right along swimmingly in this fun, madcap story about a pair of paranormal PIs who end up getting tossed into the deep end of the pool more often than not.

Simon Strong tells the story.  He's something of a loose cannon and brazens things out when facing powerful vampires, powerful gods, or any authority figures.  Simon is a human immortal after being cursed by a god.  His investigation partner is a reticent, powerful mage with a British stiff upper lip named Tristan Montague.  Monty and Simon shouldn't get on.  At all. But they are as tight as can be and have each other's back during the course of their work and in personal friendship.

Other quirky and fun characters were introduced even as the pair tackle a few different cases and missions that usually involve near death and lots of destruction.  But, it’s the rise of a god determined to end the world that has Simon and Monty pushed to their extreme.  I loved the snark, action, and intensity as they somehow find their way out of some tight spots.

In summary, I had a good time with this sometimes humorous, but very exciting first in series.  It will hold strong appeal for Urban Fantasy lovers who enjoy a blend of gods and paranormal with an appealing pair of supernatural detectives and their quirky acquaintance and friends.

My thanks to Tantor Audio for the opportunity to listen to the book in exchange for an honest review.

Narrator Review:
4 stars

The narrator, Kevin T. Collins, was as new to me as the author and the series.  I thought he did a decent job at both the voices and the action.  I think he did pretty good with genders and accents and catching Simon's voice the best.  It took me some adjustment to get used to his way of narrating, but in the end, I got used to it and settled in nicely.

Orlando Sanchez has been writing ever since his teens when he was immersed in creating scenarios for playing Dungeon and Dragons with his friends every weekend. An avid reader, his influences are too numerous to list here. Some of the most prominent are: J.R.R. Tolkien, Jim Butcher, Kat Richardson, Terry Brooks, Piers Anthony, Lee Child, George Lucas, Andrew Vachss, and Barry Eisler to name a few in no particular order.

The worlds of his books are urban settings with a twist of the paranormal lurking just behind the scenes and generous doses of magic, martial arts, and mayhem.

Aside from writing, he holds a 2nd and 3rd Dan in two distinct styles of Karate. If not training, he is studying some aspect of the martial arts or martial arts philosophy.
He currently resides in Queens, NY with his wife and children and can often be found in the local Starbucks where most of his writing is done.

Ever dutiful, he tracks down his missing betrothed. When Naledi mistakes the prince for a pauper, Thabiso can’t resist the chance to experience life—and love—without the burden of his crown.

I love the beat to this song! and even though I'm not a fan of most rappers these days, I gotta say both Ferg and Nicki killed their verses in the Plain Jane remix.

Want to share that song you been loving like crazy lately? Just grab the image above or make your own...and whether you have a blog or not; you can show a video, a music player..whatever suites your fancy. Just remember to have fun! ♫♫.

I wish ya'll can see the actual video but Tidal....
Now I have Tidal because 1 Beyonce' (not her huzband, lols) and 2 all of the gahtdamn artist are on there first for everythang man!

Anyhoo's Amara La Negra has been out in the world but got popped really fast in the American market once she hit LHMiami which I don't watch (because ratchness, lols). I do however watch various Youtubers who do reviews on the show. But Ms. La Negra has something and I'm down for whateva it is. This song has been on my replay list for forever and a day. She does go in-between English and Spanish. Anyhoo's Amara is the break out star of the show and people either love or hate her because whenever a woman especially a woman of color talks about issues that affect her life whether they be good or bad, it's a problem. Amara is speaking out about colorism in the Latin American market and folks are out here acting like shit doesn't exist (I can't even....). Chile that's a whole nother post but until then enjoy this music!

This beat....whew!!!!! 😎

Goodreads Group: The Black Bookcase

Monday, March 5, 2018

Well hello there! Today, I want to spotlight a new group I'm a part of over at the Goodreads. Created by fellow book blogger Monica over at Monlatable Book Reviews, the Black Bookcase is a group that will share/recommend books that are written by black author who write black stories. Pretty much all genres will be featured. We will also share some bargins (because who can't do without a lil saving?) and share new releases as well. All in all, this will be a discussion group as well.

We are asking and ARE encouraging book bloggers (especially black bloggers) to join the group and share your love of reading stories that encompass characters of color.

I love this idea by Monica. We sometimes *coughs*  see folks are saying that there aren't enough black book bloggers out here in these blogging streets BUT I am here to tell you along with other bloggers that we are here and guess what? Now you know, lols. But in all seriousness, fellow readers/bloggers/Vloggers head on over to Goodreads and request to join. Authors, if you would like to recommend your book to be shared in the group, please let me know and I will be more than willing to share it here on the blog AND in the group. Hit me up at brazenbabereviews@gmail.com with your book deets.

Have a good week beautiful people and as always Happy Reading whatever you are reading!
