*There is a spoiler here, so if you don't want to see it...move along, lols.

I'm marking this as my first DNF of the year. As a reader of a "certain age" lols, I know what my taste in stories are and Heart of the Hustle isn't part of it. I must say however, that the blurb is intriguing and what drew me into requesting this one.

Heart of the Hustle has many red flags that I should not have by-passed (the constant misogyny, the exploitation of black/brown neighborhoods in the name of we gotta eat, etc...etc). I thought "surely, it's going to get better..hold on girl but when we get to the part where *spoiler here*... Angel's girlfriend and brother are pretty much sleeping around with each other behind his back, I had to check out. At this point, I knew the mess was going to get messier and I had to check out.

Much success to the author and happy reading to the folks who may enjoy this kind of story but, it's not my glass of wine so I'm gonna pass.

Thank you to the author/publisher/Netgalley for the opportunity to read/review.

2019 Journal Set Up

Tuesday, January 22, 2019

Hey Babes!

2019 is starting off quiet well. I've decided to take my journal work a bit more serious this year. I think last year I was over-whelmed and fell off keeping up with it all. And I know some folks have different journals/planners for different things going on around them but in my best interest, keeping one would be best.

Take a look at my set up so far. I have a some more items to add, more stickers and I also a cool bookshelf sticker to add that will help me keep up with my Goodreads challenge this year...I stoked!

If you're keeping a journal/planner, let me know in the comments below. Share yours and also if you know of any cool planner stores I can check out 😃

#BookReview: The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle

Wednesday, January 16, 2019

Author: Victor LaValle
Published: February 16, 2016
Format: eBook (NOOK)
Genre: Literary  Fiction | Horror

This book is something else and I mean that in a good way.

Charles Thomas Tester aka Black Tom finds himself caught up in the world of supernatural events while trying to hustle enough money so that he can take care of himself and his ailing father.

What happens after Black Tom delivers a mysterious book to a seemly elderly white woman and then taking the job of playing the guitar for a rich white mans dinner party...it all goes awry. Tom finds himself recruited into the supernatural without permission, then being provoked into being the very monster that the world has proclaimed him to be and the people who "assumed" he was some ignorant willful negro learn way to late that Black Tom is surely the boogie man they fashioned him to be.

Set around race in 1924 Harlem New York, Mr. LaValle our author weaves a brilliant story while interlacing themes of horror and macabre. I was totally invested in Black Tom's world, his daily hustle to him being drawn into the world of magic as he seeks IMO revenge against the grave injustice shown towards himself and his family.

The Ballad of Black Tom is enthralling and my gawd...perfection. Cleverly done Mr. LaValle and I'm anxiously looking forward to reading more of his works.

My Review/Recap

Now, if you read my review of A Princess In Theory, then you know I said I wanted a book about Lakotsi. She was such an integral part of Thesabo's story, we NEEDED her story...or at least I did, lols.

Oh, this story was so cute! and relevant. Both Lakotsi and Fabiola were such re-latable characters. From their initial awkwardness of running into each other on that train to finally realizing that maybe a second chance at love is something worth grabbing onto...even after hurt feelings.

Ms. Cole does an excellent job of fleshing out both characters apprehensions and desires. I was totally in love with both Lakotsi and Fabiola by the end of Once Ghosted, Twice Shy.

This is a great addition to the series and so far....my favorite ❤.

NetGalley and Me

Friday, January 4, 2019

So ya'll I have been on NetGalley...a-lot lately.

I've been on there just requesting shit and not to say that its not #Goodreads that I'm requesting because from the covers and the descriptions, they most definitely are but ya'll....

I've been getting approved for like almost every book that I've requested and I'm not saying that I shouldn't be or that I'm not happy that I've been approved because I'm am...I'm very happy.

But ya'll when I look at my dashboard...I'm like bish....what.the.fraggle? (I'm trying to stop cussing, lols).

And I've been tweeting my ups and downs about my apparent addiction...

NetGalley even quote tweeted this one.

So as you see from above, it's been quite the elevator ride with myself and NetGalley.

And guess what? I'm still on there...lols.

Anyhoo's, I've decided to make a list of the books I've been approved for so that I can get to reading and reviewing them.

Below is what I have so far to read and I say so far because you know....addiction and all (these aren't in any order but my paper list is).

 4/15/19                         3/18/19                 2/5/19

1/29/19                        2/26/19                      2/26/19

And let me not forget that I requested all of the books in the Charley Davidson by Darynda Jones with the exception of book 1 which I already had. Those I requested with the help of fellow blogger Monica over at Monlatable Book Reviews. Yes, I am naming her as a co-conspirator, lols. Good thing about the C. Davidson ones are that they don't have a date that I need to read/review them by...whew! And with the others, there is a good amount of time before the release dates that I have t read...another whew!So that's my post for NetGalley babes. Have you been on there lately? What did you request? and How many? I know I can't be the only one, lols.
