Laken Kimble was is....Big Dick Energy.

What I loved so much is not just the story but the characters themselves. Laken Kimble and Keris Bradford. Both damaged from their perspective traumas but both also willing to take a chance on this new relationship. Equivalent Exchange is another story where the character traumas weren't exploited for the sake of a "good story". Both Laken and Keris were surrounded by love, support and therapy. They are both what happens when care is taken when writing.

Even though Keris was resistant in a way to what Laken is offering, she herself couldn’t just walk from it. What is Keris willing to give up of equal value?
The fact that Laken wasn’t on her back or damn near forcing her to “be with him”. He knew Keris’s boundaries and he respected her enough to not walk all over them.

Off topic.
I feel like at times in the romance genre, we get these pushy ass dudes shoving their big ass heads in a woman’s world even when she is point blank telling him “like look fool, I’m in but I need a minute…I need space” But because he’s all *alpha and *swoon worthy, that shit gets passed off as something good. But in all honesty, dude is really just a manipulative asshole. And me being all heart-eyed, I loved the shit out these kind of characters.
I like to think our taste changes as we mature...

Back on topic.
Difference with Laken was that yeah he wanted Keris and yes, he told her a plenty that she was his but dude KNEW not to push especially given that he knew her previous relationship was abusive af. Laken was on his grown man ya'll. Now dude was not without his issues. Laken suffered lost in this story, he had a tendency to close himself off and shut people out (daammnnn if this wasn't me....). He was about to give up on what he so purposefully sought with Keris. But ma'am was like you know what? No. You got me all hot and bothered with this Kismet shit; oh no my dude, you are not about to check out on me. What is Laken willing to give up of equal value?

This story ya’ll. Kismet, spiritual forces, love and hope. Hope for something better…tangible. Both Keris and Laken wanted this. Thank you Christina C. Jones for including therapy in this book. Especially given what Keris suffered in her life. Yeah, dick is good but sometimes a bish gotta talk to a professional too. Thank you for including full therapeutic conversation in this story. Thank you for referencing Anime (Full Metal Alchemist) and how the themes of those stories can and do shape real life.
"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange.” -  Edward Elric
What were both Keris and Laken willing to give up for Equivalent ExchangeThis story is well worth diving into to find out.
